C. 1. Long Answer Questions:

Question 1. On the basis of your reading of scene I, do you think that Lomov and Choobookov are cordial neighbours ?
Answer:
Yes, I think Lomov and Chubukov are cordial neighbors. When Lomov calls Chubukov, he welcomes him. He calls him his respected neighbor. He complains that Lomov has almost ignored him as he has visited him after a long time. Lomov, for his part, admires Chubukov. He says that Chubukov has always been kind and helpful to him.

Question 2. Write a short note on the character of Lomov on the basis of his self-revelation in scene II ?
Answer: Lomov is an old bachelor. He is thirty-five years old and cannot decide whom to marry. Perhaps he is looking for an ideal woman for marriage. He is not able to take any concrete decision. He is suffering from many serious diseases. He suffers from heart palpitations and fluttering of nerves and eyelids. He is also shy and lacks confidence. He is afraid that Natalia might not accept him.

Question 3. Are Lomov and Natalia really interested in laying claim to Ox- meadows ?
Answer: Lomov and Natalia are not really interested in laying claim to Ox-Meadows. As Natalia says, it doesn’t cost much. The grasslands have been neglected for a long time. But it is arrogant of both Lomov and Natalia to make this claim. Both are ready to give this gift to each other. But theoretically they say that they cannot allow anyone to take them because they are their property.

In this quarrel they forget a more serious and important matter—the marriage proposal. Anyhow when Natalia learns that Lomov has come to propose to her she tells him that he made a mistake. The meadows belong to him. But Lomov again reiterated his claim on them. Due to his ego, he does not want to let this matter rest here.

Question 4. Do you think that Natalia was also interested in marrying Lomov ? What makes you think so ?
Answer: Yes, Natalia is very interested in marrying Lomov. She has a serious fight with him because she doesn’t know that he has come to propose her. But when he leaves and her father tells her the true purpose of Lomov’s visit, Natalia becomes frantic. She moans and screams. She asks her father to bring her back as she wants to accept him immediately.

When Lomov came back, she started talking about the meadows, wanting him to talk about the proposal instead. She gives up her claim on the grasslands. She is desperate not to lose her lover. After all, she is twenty-five years old and does not want to remain single her whole life. When Lomov kisses her she says, “I’m so happy.”

Question 5. Despite his heated arguments with Lomov, Choobookov in the last scene shows haste in finalising the marriage. What could be the reason of his haste?

Ans:- Chubukov is extremely worried about the marriage of his old daughter Natalia. She wants him to get married without any delay. When he learned that Lomov had come to propose to him, he was very happy. He hugs and kisses Lomov. He calls him his son. He assures her that Natalia will accept him.

Unfortunately Lomov and Natalia are easily agitated. They quarrel over the question of ownership of the grasslands. When Chubukov heard the noise he immediately ran to see what was the matter. But he supports his daughter and thus the real purpose of Lomov’s visit is lost. But when Lomov left, and he told Natalia that Lomov wanted to propose to her, she blamed Chubukov for the quarrel. She asks him to bring her back. He feels like killing himself.

Lomov comes again. Once again they fought over the superiority of their dogs. Once again Chubukov supported his daughter. But Lomov is too excited and he falls. Natalia cried again at this prospect. It looks like their marriage is over forever.

When Lomov comes to his senses, Chubukov does not miss the opportunity to arrange their marriage. He quickly joins their hands and forces them to kiss each other. He is happy because the burden has been lifted from his back. Now he can live in peace.

Question 6. Do you think the title of the drama is suitable ? Give reasons in support of your views. Suggest a different title of the drama ?

Ans:- The content of the play does not match the title. We see that there is neither a marriage proposal, nor a love-talk, nor any interface or addition to the beloved. Instead we find that he is an elderly bachelor who suffers from multiple disabilities. The woman is not an attractive personality but an adult woman of classical years.

Lomov shyly tells Chubukov that he has come to propose to his daughter Natalia. But when Lomov and Natalia are together they do not give coherent speeches like love-birds do. Instead they are embroiled in a feud over ownership of Ox-Meadows. Chubukov, who knows the purpose of Lomov’s visit, does not try to calm him down. Instead she supports her daughter and fights seriously. Pripyat Lomov is active, his heart is beating fast and he is gone. But neither Chubukov nor Natalia showed him mercy.

But Natalia soon understood her purpose and went on a journey. She cries and asks her father to bring her back.

Shemale Lomov returns. This time Natalia is male and beloved. He wants her to propose so that she accepts him immediately. But both Natalia and Lomov are completely optional. They start bickering over a small matter, the superiority of their respective paintings. There is no restriction on these. They have no idea about the actual archive—the marriage proposal. Neither Lomov proposed nor Natalia accepted him. It is Chubukov who looks more curious. Lomov is nearly dead and Natalia is hysterical. When Lomov found out. Chubuk created his own hand formulas, although they were still debating.

Not the title of the actual play. The title of the play should be ‘A Comedy of Human Vanity’.

Question 7. Natalia and lomov would be an ideal couple Do you agree? Give reasons
Answer: The basic requirement of an ideal couple is mutual respect, understanding and sacrifice. But Natalia and Lomov are made of a different thing. Both have stubborn pride. They are not ready to bend even a little. For example, ox-meadows are a worthless piece of land. This is disputed. Both Lomov and Natalia lay claim to it. Lomov is prepared to take the case to court to prove his claim.

Natalia, on the other hand, asks her father to immediately send a man to cut the grass. They both call each other by name, Lomov is about to faint but he keeps repeating that it was his aunt’s grandmother’s.

This matter is over. But they start fighting again over the superiority of their dogs. It is an unimportant matter but both Natalia and Lomov make it a matter of life and death. The quarrel continues even after the engagement. None of them is ready to bow down or remain silent. This fight, and many like it, would ruin their married life. They will keep fighting over small things. But, since both need each other, they will stay together. But they will be far from being a perfect couple.

C. 2. Group Discussion

Discuss the following in groups or pairs :

Question 1. Arguments for the sake of arguments lead to nowhere.
Answer: Man is the only creation of God who is endowed with the power of reasoning and sophisticated language. They are great blessings. All human civilizations and progress are the result of these. Science and philosophy, literature and commerce could not have developed without the power of reason and could not have been transmitted from person to person and from generation to generation without language. But man has a terrible weakness. Sometimes they even argued about it. Although he had no solid basis to support his views, he still did not agree. Such arguments can be continued as long as desired. But they don’t lead anywhere.

Question 2. Marriages are settled in heaven but are solemnised on the earth.
Answer: A lot can be said for and against this statement. Most people believe that this is absolutely true. There is a destiny that decides marriages. This is not a one-sided matter. You cannot marry another person without his or her consent. People say that no matter how hard you try. You will definitely tie the knot with the person you are meant to be with. But there are some people who do not agree with this. They say that if marriages are made in heaven then why do divorces happen. Marriage is a social practice.

It binds two people together in a special way. Like marriage, divorce is also a social practice. Marriage and divorce are social and legal matters. They are the inventions of our civilization. We could work even without marriage. But if we do this, it will lead to social anarchy. But heaven has nothing to do with marriage and divorce.

C. 3. Composition

Question 1. Write a short essay in about 150 words on the following:

Question a. Role and responsibility of parents in marriage.
Answer:

The role and responsibility of parents in the marriage of their children varies from society to society and culture to culture. Earlier, parents were given full responsibility for the marriage of their children. In India, daughter’s marriage was the sole and serious responsibility of the parents. As soon as the girl became marriageable, the parents had sleepless nights. The girl’s father was busy searching for a suitable groom for her. He tried his best. In many cases they had to go into debt or sell their land to pay dowry and meet other social and religious obligations. In the old days, the girl had no rights in the matter of her marriage.

But now the situation has changed a lot. Firstly, the social fabric, especially in towns and cities, has changed a lot. Secondly, there is no joint family. Third, boys and girls enjoy more freedom than ever before. Therefore the role and responsibility of parents is very less. According to the latest trend, boys and girls choose their own partners, and parental consent is a formality.

Question b. Social relevance of marriage.
Answer: Marriage has the utmost relevance in human society. In fact, the institution of marriage has very deep roots in our civilization. It would not be an exaggeration to say that marriage and civilization developed together. And human society would be no better than a herd of animals without marriage. Our laws of inheritance, responsibility of parents to children, and responsibility of children to parents are branches of the institution of marriage. G.B. Like some philosophers. Shaw who advocated the abolition of marriage.

They want the government to take responsibility for the upbringing of children and care of the elderly. But this is just a theoretical idea. This is not practical. Marriage is recognized in every culture and has sanctity in all religions. Marriage is not just a matter between two people. It is the basis of the family, and family is the basis of society.
