Q. 1. Did Benjy treat his parents justly? What would you do if you were Benjy?
Answer:
No, Benji treated his parents extremely heartlessly and unfairly. He made every sacrifice for him. They gave him chickens, built barns on his land, and helped him save more money than he ever had before. But Benji was never grateful to him. He forgave him because he always believed that he was not in his right mind. But in the end Benji kicks them out of the house and leaves them to fend for themselves.

He showed no emotion and no affection. He did not think even for a moment how his old parents would live. If I were Benji, I would treat my parents with respect. I would have been grateful to him for his love, care and help. I never kick them out of the house. If there was not enough space in the house. I would have added two or three more rooms to it. But I will never let them leave the house where they were living for the last forty years.

Question 2. On how many occasions were Benjy’s parents disappointed with Benjy’s behavior? Describe each occasion briefly in your own words.
Answer:
The parents were frustrated with Benny’s behavior on at least five separate occasions. At first, when the parents gave Benjy the passbook they were disappointed with his behavior. For this he had saved a lot of money. He hoped that Benjy would say a word of gratitude, and would want to share the money with him.

ut Benji opened the passbook, checked the balance and kept it in his pocket, such behavior hurt the parents. Secondly, he was disappointed when Benjy was going to buy his land from Sanders. They asked Benjy what he was going to do with the land. Benji simply told them that he was going to build more incubator houses on it.

His parents are once again hurt because they expected him to say something different. Maybe some people are planning to use it for them. When he decided to marry Florence he was once again disappointed. They asked him where he would stay and without a moment’s hesitation he said that he would stay here. He asked them to vacate the front bedroom because he wanted it. When Benji asked them to leave the house they were not only disappointed but also scared of him. For the last time, they were disappointed when Benjy took them into town and said, “You’d be better off staying at the lodge.” His words were emotionless. The parents were stunned with grief.

Question 3. ‘Looks are deceptive.’ How does this apply to Benjy?
As a child, Benji appeared not only innocent but simple-minded. He had large loose limbs, thick soft fair hair on his face and blue eyes. There was a smile on his face the whole day. His parents believed that he was not like other children. In his opinion, he lacked common sense. His brain needed proper development. But in reality Benji proved to be the cleverest person.

He was selfish and cruel. He had no love from his parents. He did not feel gratitude. The climax came when he threw his parents, who had given up everything for him, out of the house. In fact, his simple and innocent appearance was deceiving. They hid his cunning behind them.

Question 4. What is the role of Florence in this story? How did she affect Benjy’s life?
Answer:
Florence was one of Benjy’s employees. He helped her in cleaning the hen houses. She was not good looking. She had thick short legs and hanging lips. Benji falls in love with her. Till now he was only interested in chickens. This was a turning point in his life. Benny decides to marry her despite his parents’ disapproval. He wanted her because she could help him with the chickens. After Florence left as Benjy’s wife, there was unrest in the house. Benjy had a bad relationship with his mother. They didn’t like each other.

Benji’s mother felt that she was taking him away from her. There used to be fights. At first, Benny’s parents had to vacate their bedroom for Benji and Florence. Later they started living in different parts of the house. Eventually, in a fit of rage, Benji tells his parents to leave the house and go to live in the city. This was the final break between their relations. Florence must have played a role in this breakup. But Benji was also a heartless person. Florence was also like him. They united to throw their old parents out of the house.

Question. 5 Johnson himself was responsible for his tragedy or troubles. Do you agree with this? Give reasons.
Answer:
Johnson and his wife loved Benjy very much. From the beginning he believed that Benji was a child with a simple nature and a simple heart. He took the doctor’s advice and helped Benji raise chickens. He borrows every penny for Benji. He kept it in the bank. When Benjy was 21, they gave him a passbook. He accepted it without issuing any stock-package.

He was selfish. But Johnson and his wife always forgave him because they believed that Benjy was not in his right mind. Eventually Benji threw them out of the house. Johnson was at fault. Firstly, he was lazy and never tried to get better produce from his land. Secondly, he did not save any money for a rainy day. Third, he never learned a lesson from Benji’s selfish behavior. If he had been a little wiser, he would not have had to suffer in old age.

Love and sacrifice are the basis of an ideal family. It is an ideal family in which all the members love each other and are ready to do and sacrifice anything for each other. Joint family was and still is an ideal family in India. There are young and bobble, men. And women. They live together. The family’s income comes together. To each according to his own need.

All the children take care of the children. Elderly men and women are respected. His experience provides great support to his young colleagues. In return, there is no problem in taking care of the old people. Senior members are served by rank-and-file members. Family approval is maintained. Women are entertained. Members share many of their things and avoid copying. In this way they live an economic and happy life.

2. Write a paragraph in about 100 words on the ‘duties of children towards their parents’
Answer:
Parents make every possible effort to raise children. In return, children are expected to perform their duties towards their parents. All religions and all societies expect this. Especially when parents become old and weak, they need help from their children. Therefore children should take care of them. The first and foremost need of old parents is love and companionship.

They often feel lonely and depressed. Therefore, time should be taken out to spend time with children and grandchildren. They should never let themselves feel neglected and unwanted. Then they should be given only that food which they like and can digest. If they are unwell they should be given immediate medical attention. They should be given clean clothes to wear. Parents don’t expect much. They are happy if they get love and care. ,
