The Artist is a short story written by Japanese short story writer Shiga Naoya. This is the story of a Japanese genius boy. This story shows how the talents of young children are often destroyed by adults. Sibei was a twelve year old boy. He studied in primary school. After class ended, instead of playing, he used to roam around the city in search of guards. In the evening he would sit in a corner of his room with new fruits. He used to make a hole in it and take out the seeds. He used to fill that pit with tea leaves.
He would then polish it with wine left by his father. Sibei gourd had become a habit. But one day he is caught with Gordon at his school. The teacher snatched the card from Sibei and complained to his father. Seibei’s father destroyed all the gourds that Seibei had hung in his house and scolded him. The teacher gave that card to the concierge. Two months later, he sold the gourd to a curio-diller for 50 yen, and the curio-diller sold the same gourd to a collector for 600 yen. Now Sibei is busy in making pictures.
Thus, this story shows how Seibei’s interest was destroyed.
