Class 12 English Poetry Chapter 2 Now the leaves are falling fast Summary in Hindi & English
Now the leaves are falling fast,
Nurse’s flowers will not last;
Nurses to the graves are gone,
And the prams go rolling on.
Nurse flowers- Flowers growing under or next to a supporting tree called ‘Nurse’.
Pram – (Perambulators) A four-wheeled baby carriage.
In the first stanza the poet described how fast the leaves were falling from the trees and how the flowers would not last so long. Flowers that were growing under or next to a supporting tree called a ‘nurse’ were also dying towards the grave and were being carried in a four-wheeled baby carriage, called a pram. The poet has compared human life with trees and what he means to say is that all human beings are rapidly moving towards death due to diseases and other reasons. His wishes and aspirations were not fulfilled during his lifetime. Hence he became disappointed and started feeling lonely. Like a tree, every human life had to be destroyed. Nothing will last that long. Despite this, the cycle of life will continue.
Whispering neighbours, left and right,
Pluck us from the real delight:
And the active hands must freeze
Lonely on the separate knees.
whispering neighbours: agents or messengers of death.
Pluck- detach, take away
Freeze- become ice cold after death
In the second stanza the poet is disappointed with the behavior of selfish modern man. The poet said that the angels of death were present everywhere in various forms to snatch away the happiness of humans. People show false love to each other. The poet also said that hands that were once active would become cold as ice after death, which meant that those who were alive today would die tomorrow. People had limited themselves. He suffered from a sense of loneliness in which he lived and died.
Dead in hundreds at the back
Follow wooden in our track,
Arms raised stiffly to reprove
In false attitudes of love.
Wooden– in wooden coffins
Stiffly- in a hardened, difficult way
Reprove- rebuke
Attitudes- ways of thinking
In the third stanza the poet talks about hundreds of dead bodies being carried backwards in wooden coffins, people raising their arms stiffly, and the intense disapproval or criticism of humans because of their behavior or actions. Were expressing. The dead were leaving empty handed because they were mocking the false attitude of man. Perhaps they were saying that they were not taking anything with them from this world.
Starving through the leafless wood
Trolls run scolding for their food:
And the nightingale is dumb.
And the angle will not come.
last distress- end of life, death
In the fourth stanza, the poet has compared the life of old people with forests and leaves. He told how hungry, evil and ugly creatures like wolves are searching for their prey in this world. Since the gentlemen did not have the courage to oppose him, he remained silent. Since the world was in such chaos, no angel would come to save them. The nightingale’s stunned silence completed the images of death.
Cold, impossible, ahead
Lists the mountain’s lovely head
Whose white waterfall could bless
Travellers in their last distress.
last distress- end of life, death
In the last stanza the poet has described how desert-like conditions, lifelessness, despair and emptiness had surrounded him and when winter came the hope of life arose. Then the mountain raised its head and quenched the thirst of all the travelers who had been waiting for a very long time. The poet concludes the poem with a feeling of optimism. The poet said that like a tree, every human life has to be destroyed. Death provided silence and peace like white springs which produced inner pleasantness and peace.

C.1. Long Answer Questions
1. Falling of leaves suggests the process of death and human waste on a large scale. Explain with reference to the poem.
Answer- Falling of leaves indicates mass death and the process of human waste. The poet has compared human life with trees and what he means to say is that all human beings are moving very fast towards death due to diseases and other reasons. First of all human life started as an infant and gradually it grew but after some time human life started suffering from many diseases. Like the weather, human life also keeps changing. When the weather changes the leaves fall. Similarly, human life also decreases and decays.
His wishes and aspirations were not fulfilled during his lifetime. Hence he became disappointed and started feeling lonely. Like a tree, every human life had to be destroyed. Nothing will last that long. Despite this, the cycle of life will continue. This means that human life is like a leaf falling from a tree.
2. The poet is critical of the negative tendencies of human society. What are these tendencies? Give details.
Answer- The poet is a critic of the negative tendencies of human society. He wants to say that human life is completely dependent on human society. Without human society it can neither develop properly nor do anything good. There are different types of castes or sects. The poet says that all human lives are equal and belong to the same society but people form different types of castes and divide themselves. The poet says that this is not good.
3. Who are the ‘Strolls’ in the real world ‘?
Answer- Poet W. According to H. Auden, those people are ‘trolls’ in the real world who divide human life into different castes or sects. These are the people who commit crimes, trouble others and always think about wrong things. They do not think about others and their problems. They hurt people who are gentlemen. These types of people are ‘trolls’ in the real world.
4. Though the poet refers to ‘death’ several times, yet the poem is not a pessimistic one. Justify your answer.
Answer- The poet has mentioned death several times in his poetry, yet the poem is not pessimistic. In this poem the poet has compared human life with trees. He told how trees become leafless in autumn. It looks like he is an old man who is suffering from illness. It seems that the poet has expressed the reality of life. The end of everything is inevitable. But the cycle of life and death will continue. Since there are different types of weather, people also suffer from different types of diseases. But the poet concludes the poem with a sense of optimism. The poet said that like a tree, every human life has to be destroyed. Death provided silence and peace like white springs which create inner pleasantness and peace.
C.3. COMPOSITION
Write a paragraph in about 100 words on each of the following:
1. If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
Answer- Life is rich with good and bad. Man should understand the law of nature. By winter it means sorrow and suffering and by spring it means joy and happiness. It is said that just as spring is followed by winter, happiness is followed by sadness. Therefore no one is guilty of suffering forever because nothing is permanent. Sometimes sadness also gives way to happiness, as it is said that every dark cloud has a silver lining. Since change is the law of nature, we should not be pessimistic but optimistic and should bear even the bad times patiently and not lose courage. Every person has sad and happy days but they do not last forever. Sometimes there is sadness and sometimes happiness because nothing is permanent.
2. Let us make this world a better place to live in.
Answer- Life is beautiful and the world is a beautiful place to live. God has blessed us with a beautiful world. But the world is becoming a worse place to live. Be it from pollution or foreign matter. There is a need to be resourceful with natural resources. Man is putting so much pressure on this earth that an imbalance has arisen. Today such a time has come when people no longer have the feeling of brotherhood. They are afraid to trust other people. They are very scared and trying to protect themselves and protect themselves from their enemies. So it is our duty to make this world a better place to live and enjoy its beauty. We should stop complaining and find positivity in everything. We should try to help and make the world a better place because we need the world to live in. We should help the needy and take care of the environment. Always be kind, polite and patient.
